OUR STORIES

"They Are Our Untold Human Songs"

Date of Birth: Unknown
When David’s father abandoned him, his mother looked after him until she failed due to her health condition that kept her at the mental hospital most times. He came to us in a terrible state as his fore head had been burnt. We took him on and started our journey with him from that time. David is in nursery school and loves to play football and watching cartoons. For now we continue to have and protect him at the shelter as his mother continues to recover fully.

YAWE BRASIO

Date of Birth: 24th/10/2012.
I am Brasiyo, and am 8 years old. I love Red very much because it is a very nice color to me. I want to be a taxi driver. I love playing Football and my favorite movie is Home alone. Brasiyo is reserved and is always playing by himself with trees and wire made cars. Brasiyo cares less about what happened to him, he only gets upset when he hears of getting resettled back to his family, we believe he was hurt so much to the point of not wanting to open up at all yet. We found Brasiyo walking and very hungry, he seemed very lost but followed us immediately with other children and we learned that after he was abandoned at his grandparents by his family it is when he chose to go to the streets. I love being at the shelter because I have everything I want and I sleep well. Aunt reads books to us. My role model is people who have saved my life. I am learning about God with others. I want to go back to school and learn English.

Date of Birth: 9th/09/2014.
She is 9 years old; I love Blue color because it is the color I have always played on the board games at home. I love cows because of the milk and I love to play with the dolls they gave me for Christmas. Her step mother is the reason why she came to the streets because she was mistreating her. Whenever she would ask for food, she would hurt her so much. She was prompted to go to the streets due to the over deprivation of food and her father being an absent parent worsened the condition as the step mother wasn’t held accountable by anyone at all. I came to the streets because I was over beaten and the police would always just bring me home and not take me away. We tried resettling Medilina into her family a couple of times since 2019 but to our dismay the violence only continued to the extent that we had to involve a different police station. We have since then brought her back to the shelter and she’s living with us. She loves food, playing with her dolls and counting every person at the dining area for breakfast bananas. Her dream is to be a teacher. "My role model is the police man who carried and aunt for picking, I love them so much. I don’t know about Jesus because my family is Muslim but aunt teaches us every day about God".

Christine is doing amazing enjoying herself with the rest of the children and hopes to be a nurse in future. She loves to play with dolls. Christine loves green because of the crops we grow at the shelter, "I love cows. I have been with Aunt Hajara for a year now and I love the shelter so much I play with my friends every day. My favorite book is Gulu goes to school, Aunt and uncle read it to us a lot. Baby’s day out is my favorite movie and i love it very much. I love to sing Jesus loves me this I know." .

I love red, I like cats at the shelter we see one every day in the compound. Baby’s day out is my favorite movie of all time and I like it a lot. In my free time I love to dance and learn how to move my legs with the drums that we play at the house. I have been at the shelter for a year now and I love to stay at the shelter, there is no pain at the shelter and I like to be happy and play with others. I want to go back to school and learn everything that I can learn. I want to be like Aunt because she brings us happiness. I also enjoy washing clothes and digging, Brenda cares for our shelter container gardening and ensures that the plants are watered every evening." When we met Brenda at first she was so sad and literally engaged in conversations with others, it took her time until she was fully used to the other children. She was lured to the streets because her father neglected her and never assumed his responsibilities. It was always the neighbors that felt sad and would give her meals. Parent’s separation is the major root cause for her going to the streets. Brenda is doing well and improving every day with her reading and writing.

Darious is ten years old, he loves to make toy cars out of old iron wires [scrap metals]. He is always teaching his friends to make cars. His dream is to be a police officer because he wants to protect street children. We met Darious during our night outreach with his sister and they joined the street after their mother lost her restaurant job. The restaurant was what they considered to be their home. Loss of the restaurant job led to the increased hunger that they had to endure. His father left them with their mother since he was 3 years. Darious joined us at the beginning of March last year and since then he has been with us. His health is much better than when we found him and on the second line of medication. We met Darious in a very bad shape and rushing him to hospital, we discovered he has an illness that requires monthly visits to hospital and his life demands on certain medications. "I love Red because most of my t-shirts are red; I love Aunt Hajara’s stories as they make me laugh mainly those about elephants. My favorite movie is Charlie Chaplin and the cure because a kid suffers from the same disease like me. Aunt is my role model. Brian is 14 years old; he loves Red because it is the color of our flag. He wants to be a doctor in future and treat children. "I love to play Football in my free time and Baby’s day out is his favorite movie. I have been at the shelter for the five months now and I enjoy being at the shelter. My role model is Aunt Hajara and Aunt Diane; they are always working for us to eat better and well. I love the shelter because my father cannot hurt me anymore and am safe. I came to the shelter in a very bad condition with all my eyes covered in red and very sick and I was treated well I have medicine for the eyes and I am happy to be alive. My father made me suffer and was hurting my mother all time when he married a young woman he forgot me and took all the things from my mother. My mother had to run away because she didn’t know what to do for me and my siblings. Aunt Hajara is looking for her in all ghetto areas. I admire my mother because she gave birth to me and saved herself at home. I am learning about God because at the shelter we pray which wasn’t the case at home as my father never wanted us to leave the house. I love that am in school now and I have everything I need. I love the shelter so much and don’t want to ever leave the shelter at all." .

Catherine is 8 years; we met Catherine through the night outreaches after the probation officer asked if we had space to accommodate. We are so glad to have her at the house. My mother was demanding many things and my father couldn’t afford it all and it is where things started to go bad. My mother decided to leave us and my father would go with me to work and when he started to get so sick I was left alone a lot and everything became very tough. My favorite movie is Alvin and the chipmunks, Boss Baby. I love lions because they are strong and don’t fear the forest. I don’t read books on my own but read what Aunt Hajara writes because it is short and with simple Words. I admire my father for doing small works to help me when I was sick because my hand was broken. Date of Birth: 27th/07/2009.
Resty is 13 years and wants to be a teacher. Resty joined the street together with her siblings and it was hard for her since she had to be the adult for all her siblings however they had to split since the police raids made every kid run in a different route. We found Resty in a sorry state battling guilt of losing her other siblings and could hardly explain things to us, we learned of her story and how she came to the streets. They got free means of transport on the fish car that always passed in their village to deliver and pick fish to sell in the city, they jumped on that car together with her siblings and came to the city. "I love pink color because it shines on women. I love to design and knit clothes at the shelter. My favorite animal is a dragon. I want to study catering and hotel management because I love to cook and organize things. Staying at the shelter is the best thing for me, I love the shelter because I am given love and cherished just like other children. It makes me very happy and pleased to see other children too. I want to go back to school and learn how to write and read everything by myself. I want to be like Aunt and her friends who help children all the time. NAKABUYE JACKIE

Date of Birth: 6th/02/2008.
Jackie is one of the sweetest girls at the shelter with a very bright smile; she is 14 years old and dreams of becoming a head mistress. "I don’t know how to read properly yet but I love reading everything I learn from Aunt. She reads stories to us and changes them and makes us laugh a lot. I have learnt about God at the shelter because at home no one believes in God.I love Home Alone movie, it is so nice and we all laugh at the shelter. I have been in the shelter for a long time now. I am happy here, I am learning, playing and eating everything I need. We have resettled her couple of times back home with her family however the resettlement with her family posed increased risk to her. Jackie’s family is so dysfunctional that not any of her parents is responsible to cater for her which makes it worse for her especially since they live in ghetto areas which are prone to vices such as alcoholism, stealing, rape among others. With parents practicing witchcraft beliefs we saw it best not to return her home for now unless there are guardians that we can fully trust to have her. Jackie dreams to be a head mistress and we are happy to be a part of that dream. "I admire head mistresses so much because they know everything in the world. I want to go back to school and be a great teacher in future and learn things."

She has been with us since that time and often we ensure she gets to visit her sick mother, at the moment the mother’s condition is stable and we continue to pray and hope that she will be fine. Elizabeth is with her. She loves white, she likes to read and learn about things, she likes Harry porter movie a lot. "I admire my mother so much because she cares for me even when she is sick. His name is Fred."I want to be a doctor in future because I want to save people and give them medicine. I have been at the shelter for one year and many months. When I first came to the shelter I was so sad and feared to be kicked out because in many homes when you start to grow people stop to love you but Aunt encouraged me to learn and be a good child. I don’t like to grow and get a beard because I will have to leave the shelter and I don’t want to go anyway. I love Yellow and inside the shelter the walls are yellow too and it is so nice . I like to sing and shout with other kids. I admire aunt Hajara because she doesn’t run away from me like my father did and I want to stay with her. NAKATE SSANYU

Date of Birth: 12/02/2013.
Ssanyu means happiness, she is 10 years, "I love yellow because it is bright because of the flowers. I want to be a doctor in future and give first Aid to kids like Aunt gave to us when we came to her programs. I enjoy it more when Aunt is the one reading the books to us and she translates everything in our language it makes me smile. My favorite movie is Harry Porter. I love staying at the shelter because am able to play and learn to dance with everyone and I have a good bed." Ssanyu came to us through the feeding program and cried for hours about her aching stomach and when provided her with a plate of food and water and she ate beyond what we usually give children and from here we learned of how she was sleeping on an empty stomach. She is making a year and three months since she started staying at the shelter. Her family’s inability to provide her with meals was because of the lockdown that costed many people their jobs and absence of her father who left them in a house together with their grandmother and a large sum of debt in rent made the situation worse as the grandmother couldn’t be able to provide for all on her own. We decided to take her on because she was returning into negligent hands that couldn’t take care of her. "I want to go back to school and learn and make many friends. I admire Aunt Hajara because she saved my life and my grandmother says she is the second I have in the world. I love God because Aunt says to us He will change our lives if we believe in Him. I love cats because they are easy to be around with. "" .

Date of Birth: 14th/11/2007.
Bridget is 15 years, will be graduating from grade 7 this year. "I love music and cleaning the kitchen all time at the shelter. I am inspired by my mother and how she tried to help and save me from our father all time when he was beating her. I love pink; my favorite movie is A walk to remember. I want to be a teacher when I grow up and do great things. I love Net ball and card games but we are always busy at home with books because the National examinations require a lot of hard work." We resettled her and her siblings a number of multiple times and due to the failure of resettlement, we welcomed her to the shelter. Alcoholism was the biggest challenge in the family that made her mother leave them behind with their father to find a better place and then pick her and her siblings however things didn’t go as she had planned. We met Bridget two years ago, we were able to resettle her and her siblings, however to our surprise we found them on the streets again during the night feeding programs, they were in bad shape and sick and looked very malnourished. We questioned as to why they were back on the streets, only to find out that their father had taken them to their grandparents in a remote village and the grandparents also felt burdened due to the responsibility. They choose to put the kids on a taxi to Kampala. The problem worsened after they failed to track their father who keeps changing places. Ever since then Bridget and her siblings moved in with us and we have failed on numerous attempts to have the father sit down with us to see how best to involve him in the lives of Bridget and her siblings. We continue to face this challenge every single day with so many children. "I have learnt the Bible since coming to the shelter and it has been wonderful and good for me to start learning to forgive people. I love the shelter because we have everything we need and we are loved by Aunt. I am happy am not beaten while at the shelter."

I enjoy reading the Bible verse that are set for us for everyday and reading stories created by Aunt."
Cynthia came through the probation officer who was called after police picked her during night and had her at the station until morning. After we got and spoke to her, we suspected that there was sexual harassment and forceful selling of her body by the people who first got to her while on the street though most of the stories were un-coordinated. Cynthia was left on her own by her aunt and this situation forced her to join the streets of Kampala. Cynthia is doing well now and enjoys cooking and spending time with family and everyone at the shelter. Cynthia came to us with a bad smell and barely wanted to participate in anything and feared to be left alone for weeks and engaging her and ensuring her that we won’t let her go made her free up and play with other children."My favorite Bible verse is there is hope for a tree that has been cut."

We found Robert dirty, with holed clothes and wounded legs. We are happy to report he is doing well since he joined us. He loves football and playing cards.
He likes playing football in his free time; Home alone is his favorite movie, brown is his favorite color. "I want to go back to school because I want to be a better man and help my family. My name is Rebecca and am 10 years old, I love to play with whole my heart and Aunt likes to run after me and we play, Staying at the shelter is the best thing to ever happen to me because I live in a good house and no floods come to disturb us at all like the old shelter. I love dogs when they are far not near me, I love to dance and make people happy at the house, I annoy other kids when I do play cards well at the shelter but I have learnt to say sorry.
I love light blue, I love my teeth too, my favorite movie is Benten, in my free time I play with dolls and I love it so much. I want to be a teacher and make kids happy and read numbers to them. I love to play Net ball with other kids as well. When I came to the shelter I was in a bad state and I refused to leave when programs ended and we demanded to stay together with other kids, I was a dirty kid and barely showered. After some weeks Aunt found space for the girls and we stayed to sleep and stay with her.
I love God because He made my life better and now I have a family of many people who like me and want to be around me every day. I am learning many things at the shelter and reading with Luckay and Aunt is always a great thing. We even eat cakes at the shelter so great things happen to me at the shelter and I love that very much. Alcoholism and prostitution is the main reason as to why streets were the only home for me because home was bad and we had to stay outside long hours until the bad things were finished inside and then we can sleep properly. .

Date of Bith:20th/06/2007.
Desire is 14 years old; she loves pink and redesigning the kitchen at the shelter all time. "I enjoy singing very loud every morning to wake others up and we do the chores. I love Sunday because after Bible study we get to play with Aunt and other children outside. My hero is Aunt Hajara and the probation officer because she is everything to me and she fought for me when they wanted to attack me and often had to hide me in different houses. My family is not a good place for me to stay because they wanted to hurt me and do sacrifices as grandfather had demanded since my mother left with the elder brother. I don’t want to remember anything about my family because they do bad things to the girls and I want to stay at the shelter until I am fully grown and finished with school.
My dream is to be a lawyer and then find my mother who I haven’t seen in five years now. I love cats because they are easy to play with.I am learning about God at the shelter now because at home no one was allowed to believe in God it is against the family beliefs. I enjoy sciences because they allow me to be a child and a good person in future. I admire my teachers very much because they teach me until I understand mathematics all the time. " We found Desire traumatized ,she was already exposed to bad things as a young one. It required us so much time to teach and assure her that she was safe, we had to hide her in many different places until we were sure that we had the placement letters needed for her. She is safe now and doesn’t need to be hidden anymore and the family cannot harm her since we reported everything to authorities. .

ENOCK MUKIIBI (RE-SETTLED).

Date of Birth: 3rd/05/2007.
Resettled.
My name is Enock, I am 14 years of age, I love being at the shelter because it is good for me to learn and be in a stable house where I receive the best care because of my health condition. I am learning the Bible and I want the Bible to help me become a good person and stop hurting others with anything that I choose to do. My role model is Aunt Hajara who continues to give me chances in life, taking me to hospital and teaching everything that I do. I like to draw cartoons in my free time because it is always good and fun for me. I love elephants and they are very unique animals to me. My favorite movie is Baby boss, Charlie Chaplin and tom and jerry. I love being at the shelter very much it is the only place that I have left like home and I have a parent who loves me and never leaves me alone at all and I love that."
We met Enock a few times before him joining the shelter and tried to resettle him several times back with his grandmother; however, the family was challenged with what to eat on a daily basis since they were many at home. Enock is one of the boys at the shelter with serious health challenges and often requires regular checkup and monitoring (sickle cells). We found Enock very sick, unable to move, dirty and in a dire state that required us to take him to the hospital immediately for proper treatment. Enock is doing much better medically and has made many great improvements (his weight is good now with less complications). Enock’s dream is to be an engineer and build tall buildings in the city. "I admire everything Aunt does for me every day.

Date of Birth: 2/12/2011.
My name is Proscovia. I want to be a Nurse when I grow up because I will treat people and wear a white dress. In my free time I love to dance because it makes me so happy and filled with Joy. My favorite movie is Hannah, I love to see women be strong and fight for themselves. It makes me so happy to watch. I want to go back to school because I want to be a good leader in the world. I love lions and I watch them on television a lot. I love color Red very much and my file at home is Red.
Proscovia is one of the girls who were found in poor state as she was assaulted sexually and was ill. It took her time to fully open up as she was in fear of the person who hurt her. However after bringing her to the shelter she fully started to be herself and opened up to us in every single way possible. Proscovia is reserved and enjoys playing with her dolls; she is in a proper state now and still opening up piece by piece of her life story. "I want my mother to change and be my role model someday. I admire women who speak on television very much and people listen to them, Aunt watches them with us."

INNOCENT WAJAMBUKA

Date of Birth: 10th/05/2001.
Resettled.
Innocent came to us back in 2014 during the feeding programs in Katwe as a young boy. Much of his reasons to leave home circle around the death of his mother and he was abandoned in the Village to live with his grandmother and the conditions of living were beyond hard and umimagineaable and much of his grooming and responsiblity was left to him and this turned him into a different person who saw nothing in the future and thus joined the streets and got into the drugs. When Innocent joined the transitional shelter back in 2014, nothing was easy with re-grooming him and taking him through the rehabilition process. It took three years for Innocent to fully change and be apart of the community. His love for education has driven him to do better and currently he is in senior four and will be sitting for his national examinations. We are moving grateful to be apart of his journey since day one and his improvement continues to be an inspiration. We resettled Innocent back in 2020 which was not an easy process with the stigma and fear that comes with street children getting resettled and we are glad he is still home and attends a boarding school. Innocent wants to be an Enginer and his love for Art will lead him to special places. While he was still at the shelter he participated in Art competitions and earned certificates.

Date of Birth: 19th/9/2005.
James is 16 years old and he came to us three years ago. He was very sick when we found him; it took a month to get him in a better shape. He left home at 13 years because of his step mother who continued mistreating him and joined the streets. We found James during the day time outreaches at the feeding program and was ill and it is why we had to take him immediately. James wants to be a mechanical engineer and fix things. We are happy that James is doing well and stabilizing mentally from the trauma he has been dealing with. James loves black color, he likes to rear animals, he enjoys monitoring and leading other people.
"I love learning about God because God is helping me to forgive my mother who left when I was a young child and doesn’t want to visit me at all, she sees my father in me and I know she is not happy with everything he did to her at all but I forgive her. God helps me forgive because before I had a very tough heart. I am learning drums at the shelter and staying at the shelter fills my heart every day, it allows me to study and be a child. I have been in a sports camp and I enjoy it very much. My idol is Aunt Hajara she never leaves me alone, she is always saving our lives and forgiving us all the time. My favorite verse is we love because God loved us first; I love it with all my heart because I know I am loved now in my life." .

FRANCIS BARLOW

Date of Birth: 21st/6/1998.
self-Indepedent Living.
He is Francis, 20 years. He loves black color, and loves dogs; "I love to hear people read because I cannot read like others, Aunt does most of the reading and teaching us. I love and trust God with whole my heart because he has lifted me from the worse conditions to a better place. I was hopeless and didn’t know if I will get a chance to learn the things I like the most. I love photography, videography and traveling those things make me so happy and it gives me life.
We met Francis back in 2012 and he was wounded around his neck and had to rush him to hospital and it was through that hospital time that I was able to learn of his story. He stayed on the streets for a very long time as tall boys tend to suffer the consequences of being tall and growing up fast this is mainly because many homes here are not interested in having grown up children with certain heights due to the fear that it brings and the pressure it brings on to them. Given that he was on street for so long he was molested a couple of times and had gotten addicted to drug use and this made him rebellious and very hard to control until we fully took him off the streets. My hero is Aunt Hajara, she has been there for me more than my own parents who don’t even know where I am since I left home. She has done so much for me and helping me heal from all the bad things. I love the shelter because I have a home and a family with people who learn and care for each other."

Date of Birth: 29th/10/2014.
Re-settled.
Vicent is eight years old and came to us through our feeding program during the COVID-19. His unending smile drew everyone to him and through this we learned of Vicent and his background. He left home because His mother was struggling to feed him and his siblings. This was such an emergency and needed immediate approach before Vicent would get addicted to drugs and after that day's program we went on a journey to find his family and resettle him.
His mother explained to us about the conditions and her struggle and with this we were able to support her to get her garden back on track and thus feed her family. Vicent has been home since his resettlement and we are more than proud of what God has done in his life. We continue to visit and monitor him.

ZALWANGO BETTY

29th/10/2004.
Re-settled.
Betty is one of the girls whose story couldn't let us sleep without intervening to rescue her. Betty was under the guidance of her uncle who constantly took advantage of her turning her into a young wife. This form of abuse limited Betty alot from quite a number of things especially with school.
We have been in her life for years and put her through primary school. However, with her uncle demanding to take her to the city and a mother who was hardly able to cater and meet the needs of her children, she had to be taken.

After we got news of this and the trauma it caused, we needed to find a better way of helping her mother. That way the paternal family would cease to cause hindrance anymore. We were able to help Betty finish her national Primary Leaving Examinations and currently she is doing a hair dressing course.

Date of Birth: 28th/May/2017.
Ivan is four and he is the youngest child at the shelter. His early years have been characterised by trauma. Ivan's mother left his father and problems arose from this occurance. The major challenge has been alcoholism and it is this sort of behaviour that distabilised Ivan both physically and emotionally. His father was not the nicest to deal wit as he constantly made threats to make us hand over the child but he was in no capacity to take care of this sweet little boy.
When we met Ivan he was in a very bad state and needed medical attention and proper feeding and with all these being available at the shelter it made it easy for Ivan to improve and get back on his feet quickly. Ivan loves to play football and dolls. His happiness is sen when he is playing with otherchildren. His favourite colour is Red and orange.Ivan wants to be an football player.

KIWALABYE BENJAMIN

Date of Birth: Unknown.
Re-settled.
Benjamin's love for school led us into his life immediately after we found during our street programs.
Benjamin left home immediately after his parents split and with his mother's death it intentified the situation in a way that was very unbearable. The constant beatings at home led him to the streets as his father would excessively punish him in case of any mistake that he would do. When we met him he was very bruished and we had a one on one talk with him so that we would figure out a solution to his challenge.
We traced his family and were able to communicate with them and find a solution for him. His resettlement wasn't an easy process as the stages were intentified by his father, however knowing our responsibility we respected his terms as long as Benjamin was to be taken to school and treated well as any child and the punishment to be given to him had to be reasonable. We are happy that his re - settlement worked and today he is at University doing a bachelor in information technology.

Date of Birth: 10th/10/2003.
Cissy was one of the girls that used to frequent our food relief outreaches in the city slums during the COVID 19 lockdown. Mostly silent and always by herself, there was something striking about her. Something that required utmost attention. Our team interacted with her and found out she didn't have a place to stay and had been long without a home. Having assesed her need, we took her into the shelter only to later learn from the shelter cook that Cissy was pregnant. It was a very demanding and diffcult challenge to manage especially it being from a street uncle from a different program. It took her time to speak of her tribulations and only did so after she felt like she could trust us. We are happy that Cissy and her baby are safe and have a place to call home. We are hoping that she would join a skills training program that would equip her with something. We aim to trace her family this year and know what to do and how to go about everything regarding her life.

SSEMAKULA SAMUEL. (RE-SETTLED)

Date of Birth: 1st/04/2004.
Re-settled.
Samuel came to us a few years ago with a very poor state and needed critical medical attention that had affected his stomach back in 2015. Samuel was being raised by his grandmother who took on the full responsiblity of raising him after his mother passed away and his father showed no interest in raising him at all and samuel joined the streets after he satrted selling yellow banans at the road side.It was easier for samuel to join the streets as he was ready on the road that many street children were spending much of their time on. Samuel loves blue and wants to be a scitentist in future and to support his burning dream we have kept him in school and his re-settlement was a huge success, however all his needs are provided by us. Samuel is sitting for his national examinations this year and we are excited to see him go further in his education.

Abdul came to us last year after his car accident and we were able to trace him on the streets of Kampala in a common slum where many of the street children reside. He was in a bad state as his bones were broken and the look of his face spoke it all. He couldn’t walk without a stick and the first thing we did was to have an X-ray taken of him and see the state of the leg. It was in a bad state as it had taken weeks without him getting medical treatment a surgery was suggested. Taking Abdul off the streets was very problematic as many other working street children groups were on him while on the streets so that they would continue to take pictures and not help him.
This didn't stop us from doing want was right and worthy so as to save his life and Hajara suffered quite a number of injustices choosing to take the boy for the operation, they are many children just like Abdul suffering in the hands of the wrong uncles physically and emotionally and the worse truth in this it is they have the biggest and huge funding from various places and it is hard to win a case against them and this basically increases on persecutions and physical tortures that Hajara has had to undergo until Abdul improved. Many children to be taken off the streets, one has to be strong and ready to face the consequences that come with everything.
After his surgery we connected him to a family that would foster him and have him as it was far from the city and the aim for this was to help with his recovery from his drug addiction, however much of the role we thought would be played by the foster family wasn't actualized as we thought for we learned how they were mistreating him and making him work while his leg was still fragile and this in the near time demanded us to have another simple procedure repeated so that he could be able to walk and stop the constant pain he was having.
Finding his family isn’t easy and the location he comes from is dangerous at the moment to resettle a child as it is under constant attacks and the state leaders are trying to take guns away from the Karamojong’s which is causing internal and tribal conflicts among them and with this we are careful on who we will have to live him with.
Abdul's recovery and being at the shelter still continues to raise problems and constant attacks that have had to put other children lives in danger. Abdul wants to join Vocational training and take a course in vocational training and we would love to get him started come this semester.
However many street children whose addiction takes a long time / years while on the streets often suffer with relapsing and redoing it again, and with that we often have to be set to repeat the process of rehabilitation over and over again.

ABDUL LODIN

Date of Birth: Unknown. Meet Aine, a girl of multiple gifts! Aine's mother was unable to provide her family's needs because of limited finances. Many times, Aine was led to engage in income generating activities to help financially at home. She washed clothes in the community with his mother, collected used plastic bottles from dumps for recycling and sold vegetables at his mother's stall. She wanted to go to school, but there wasn't enough money for that. Her aunt is the one who picked her from the village with the hope of helping to put her in school and once that failed, things got so worse for her and it is how the police got a hold of her and recommended her to us. SHADRACK SSERWADDA

Date of Birth: Unknown. Shadrack’s mother passed on, leaving him with relatives struggling financially and unable to provide for all the family's needs. Since his grandmother could not afford his education, Shadrack’s school attendance was irregular and this made it hard for him to concentrate and learn like other children. Shadrack is now attending a primary school. His favorite subject is Mathematics. He dreams of becoming a teacher when he grows up. He stays at the shelter. He is the second case of autism that we have handled at the shelter. Shadrack goes to the church for spiritual discipleship. Please pray that He will build a relationship with the Lord Jesus. We are glad that we found him earlier before his mental health got worse. He continues to improve every day and suffer with a few issues such as talking and relating with others. The shelter is a safe place for him to grow and learn from. We continue to hope that the stigma around autism reduces in our communities such as school.

MWESIJE ABDUL KARIM

Date of Birth: Unknown. Karim is 10years old and came to us through the police officers who brought him to us when he was suffering from an ear infection which was problematic for us to handle immediately since we had programs running at time. However, the officers left him with us as they trace for his relatives. After the programs, we managed to get him the treatment that he was in desperate need of and continued to recover at the shelter and joined us ever since with other children. Many times whenever the state brings children to us in a similar manner we end up taking them on for good as we never hear from the officers’ reason being they often fail to trace the families of these children at all times.

Date of Birth: Unknown.
Joshua started with us during the Deborah’s library. Many children who joined us at that time came to us in order to find a meal and have a chance to study with others. He is among the boys who completed primary seven, his mother struggles to provide for him and his siblings. Joshua had joined bad groups and his mother could not manage him and asked us to take him in so as to keep in check and protect him from the dangerous gangs. He is now joining senior one and was the second best in his primary school. He has shelter brothers with whom he has bonded.

Many parents take this as alternative whenever situations become unbearable for them. He is at the age of understanding and growing in his love of the Lord. He is making us proud. His hope has been restored. He is enjoying studying in a good school. He receives a healthy meal daily and participates in all of the school's activities. He enjoys his Science classes the most when he is at school and helps with the cooking at home. Black is his favorite color and in the future he hopes to become an engineer.

Date of Birth: Unknown
Julius’s mother is epileptic. His father abandoned his mother when he was young and they moved into one of the dangerous neighbors. The living conditions in the home were totally unsatisfactory and unsafe for a child who continuously had to watch his mental go in and out of mental hospital. The mother suffered a lot in various ways whenever she had attacks and thus making it hard to look after him. We took him in after the last attacks she had when we learned that he was staying alone in the small tiny room that they were living in. He feels safe and secure in the shelter where he is showered with lots of love and care.
