COVID-19 CRISIS: RELIEF REPORT ON WOMEN AND FAMILIES POST LOCKDOWN
In most communities where women are the largest number of sole care givers for their homes, they have been subjected to the effects of the pandemic that have put them on increased difficulties in copying up with life. We have in the recent past months had a number of reports of mothers thrown out of houses with their children and properties due to failure to meet their rent. This phenomenon has been on the rise since most of these women have not been working due to the lockdown that was instituted by the president to curb the spread of
Coronavirus.
Some other women also suffered immense stress because of long confinement at home with their children. Stress to some of them is as a result of loss of work and earnings since government banned certain income generating activities like selling non-food items in markets, congested places where most of them were selling their roasted maize (corn) and yellow bananas among other things.
This coupled with the increased violence meted out to women and their children is mostly affecting their psychological well-being. Cases of violence continue to sky rocket every single day and we have had to intervene into some cases about six of them for the sake of the children.
WHAT WE HAVE DONE?
We have embarked on a number of solutions to help address some of this problems to see that women and
children live free. We helped the women clear rent for the next two months as they pick up from the effects of the pandemic. We also rescued eight babies and they are safe with three of the women who help foster them.
In our capacity building modules of emancipating and empowering women, we saved two women from violence and we are currently sheltering them at Diane’s house for a couple of months before we have them join independent living. Regarding sanitation, we have emptied more four pit latrines that were at full capacity.
This often requires our attention (One because of the street children run to those pit latrines and secondly for mothers not be evicted from the small rooms that they rent out in the dire areas) We gave food packages to about 70 families during the COVID period as it was tough for many families. This came with a huge responsibility as there were families that still needed help even when a few sectors had been opened up. For the elderly who cannot work at all, we deliver food stuffs to them every end of the month. Many families are still struggling with feeding its people.
Medical care is largely the most costly aspect in our works. We advanced from offering First Aid to
having to take as many women as we could to hospitals so that they get proper medical care and attention. This showed a proper understanding of what disease was weakening them.
GRATITUDE
The Bible remains our strongest foundation and we ensure that in every outreach in the different communities, we assure the women with hope by praying together.
Our prayer is that we keep doing these little acts of kindness which can lead the women to bear hope in all what seems to be life threatening situations. We continue to appreciate every single person who supports, prays and shares about our programs.
