Brenda

Date of Birth: 5th November 2011 • Grade 7

I am 14 years old. I want to be a teacher when I grow up because I love teaching, and I think it is a good profession since you learn many things. My favorite color is red, and I love cats; at the shelter, we see one every day in the compound. Baby’s Day Out is my favorite movie of all time.

In my free time, I enjoy dancing and learning how to move my legs along with the drums we play at the house. I have been at the shelter for a year now, and I love staying here. There is no pain, and I enjoy being happy and playing with other children.

I am eager to go back to school and learn as much as I can. I want to be like Aunt because she brings us happiness. I also enjoy washing clothes and gardening; I take care of the shelter’s container garden and make sure the plants are watered every evening.

When we first met Brenda, she was very sad and hesitant to engage in conversations with others. It took time for her to adjust and build relationships with the other children. She had been drawn to the streets due to her father’s neglect and lack of responsibility; neighbors often provided her meals out of concern. The separation of her parents was the primary factor that led to her being on the streets.

Brenda is now doing well and shows continuous improvement in her reading and writing skills.

Enock

Date of Birth: 3rd May 2007• Grade 5

My name is Enock, and I am 17 years old. I love being at the shelter because it provides me with a stable environment where I can learn and receive the best care, especially given my health condition. I am studying the Bible and hope it will guide me to become a good person and help me make better choices, avoiding actions that may harm others.

My role model is Aunt Hajara, who continually supports me, takes me to the hospital when needed, and guides me in everything I do. In my free time, I enjoy drawing cartoons because it is fun and relaxing. I love elephants, as I find them unique and fascinating animals. My favorite movies include Baby Boss, Charlie Chaplin films, and Tom and Jerry. The shelter feels like home to me; it is the only place where I feel loved and cared for by a parent figure who is always there for me.

Before joining the shelter, we met Enock several times and attempted to resettle him with his grandmother. However, the family faced significant challenges providing daily meals due to the number of dependents at home. Enock arrived at the shelter in a critical condition, very ill, weak, and unkempt, requiring immediate hospitalization and medical care. He is one of the boys with serious health challenges, including sickle cell disease, and requires regular monitoring. Enock has shown significant medical improvement

Age 15

Jovan

Date of Birth: 9th March 2007 • Grade 5

Jovan is 15 years old and aspires to become an athlete in the future, with a particular passion for football. He was previously among the street children affected during a government raid for violating curfew during the initial COVID-19 lockdown.

Although he was young and initially allowed to leave, he was severely beaten by the police.

It was reported that street children who were unable to provide money during raids were often targeted.

I enjoy rearing goats, a skill I learned from our neighbors while my mother was still at home with me.

My favorite color is purple, and my sports jersey is also purple. I love movies featuring children and magic, as they bring me joy and inspire me. I want to return to school and improve my English, which I currently find challenging.

My mother is my role model, and I aspire to be a good man for Aunt, who invests her time to help me learn and grow.

I am grateful to God for protecting me and everyone at the shelter, and I have learned to put Him first.

I truly appreciate the improvements He is bringing to our lives.
